Greater Victoria, BC · A Creative Practice
I design and facilitate creative programs that build belonging, confidence, and capacity to grow.
Our Mission
Sideways Creative brings structure and imagination together in service of real human growth — meeting people where they are, honouring what makes them different, and designing programs and pathways that fit the person, not the other way around.
The tools are drama, play, and visual arts. The outcome is belonging, growth, and the confidence to participate fully.
Designing programs grounded in drama, play, and creative arts — built around who's actually in the room, not a template.
Drama, play, and arts-based methods that open up participation and create genuine belonging — not despite difference, but because of it.
One integrated practice with three entry points — all rooted in creativity, play, and the same core values.

It started backstage. Props, touring, stage management — learning early that the best work happens through collaboration, timing, and trust. That led into a professional visual arts practice on Vancouver Island: work rooted in observation, texture, and the kind of honesty that doesn't come from following a formula.
In her thirties, Kyra learned to sail. She and her husband bought an old wooden boat, completed a refit, and moved aboard. What was meant to be a chapter became fourteen years at sea — Mexico, a Pacific crossing, and eventually New Zealand, where she ended up running the operations of a charitable sail training trust. Tourism sailings, youth voyages, crew and risk management. Complex work. Also the most human work she's ever done.
Inclusion is personal. Kyra grew up in the family group home her parents founded for children with developmental disabilities — difference was never abstract, it was just life. That carried forward into inclusive arts and community work, and it's woven into everything she designs.
Sideways Creative sits at the intersection of structure and imagination — shaped by backstage problem-solving, gallery walls, ocean crossings, and community rooms where something new begins quietly and grows into something that lasts.

Where values meet practice
At Sideways Creative, how we work is just as important as what we deliver. These aren't aspirational ideals — they're the foundation of every engagement. Because different by design isn't just a tagline. It's a commitment.
We start with what's real. Every program begins with listening — to lived experience, to context, to what's actually needed in the room. We don't arrive with predetermined answers.
Difference isn't a problem to solve. It's the starting point. We do the right thing, even when it's harder. We design and facilitate with transparency, ethical clarity, and deep respect for dignity and access — accountable to the people behind the deliverables, not just the deliverables themselves.
How we work matters as much as what we produce.People are the point. Real change happens when people feel genuinely seen, heard, and respected. We're not interested in surface-level engagement — we're interested in work that actually strengthens communities.
We work with people. Not at them.Curiosity is our process. We bring imagination and reflective thinking to every engagement — staying open, iterating thoughtfully, and growing alongside the people we work with. Creativity isn't a deliverable. It's how we think.
The best solutions usually come from looking sideways.Responsive to who's in the room — in-person or virtual — and what the moment actually calls for. We don't impose a format. We build from what's real and what's needed, every time.
The approach shapes itself to the work. Not the other way around.Who we work with
